January 10, 2022We all know being a software developer is not an easy job. You have challenging target deadlines and sometimes you may get overloaded with multiple projects. I think it is important for every developer to work towards a balanced lifestyle as our job usually requires us to sit behind a computer for 8+ hours a day. Especially these days when developers are sitting at home alone social distancing because of Covid-19.
I know of a couple friends that have experienced burnout and they have shared their experiences with me.
The following tips are based on the three 8s:
Eight hours of sleep.
Eight hours of work.
Eight hours of play.
7 things you can try to get out of your burnout slump:
Probably one of the most important tips I can give you. Is to get plenty of rest. It’s easy to convince yourself that you don’t need to unwind, but you need find ways to unwind and socialize and rest. Getting a goodnights rest may lead to a more productive day. Nothing is better than seeing all those tasks get done.
Get some exercise. I am not saying you should sign up with a gym, but if you can get yourself away from the computer you should take a walk or do something that is more physical. Getting your blood flowing is important and it allows the oxygenated blood to circulate all around your body.
Make better food choices. When I say this, I am not saying that you should go on a diet. Just make sure the food that you are consuming contains the nutrients you need. Believe me I have been there before. Putting thought in how you prepare you meals may also positively affect your mood.
Communicate. This is also an important tip as a developer. Keeping all parties informed will not only help keep the task load bearable, but if there is anything halting your progress you may be able to get more time to deal with the issue.
Take your breaks! It’s important to step away and come back at a later stage as it may refresh your mind and it will allow you to focus for a longer time period.
Try not to work overtime. Working overtime to me shouldn’t be a normal thing you do. If the task needs to be done ASAP then you have no choice. This is where having a good plan for the day would benefit you and it will help keep you on a time schedule.
Write out a list of all your tasks. By forming this list you can get a better view of your priorities. This will allow you to make better time estimates as you can see all the task layouts in front of you.
Look after yourself and the work will reflect. These are tips that I have compiled over some time, so I hoped this helped someone who is currently fighting this fight with “Burnout”
